Self-hosted Xebra Server

If XETEX is hosting your Xebra Server, you may skip the remainder of this page and move to the next page.

Select the computer where you will install the Xebra Server. If this is a temporary installation, almost any computer will do. If you will be using the temporary installation to do set up work, you want to make sure that the computer you are using will be connected to your finished network so that you can easily copy your setup work to the final server installation.

Insert the CD labeled "Xetex Xebra Server Setup" into the computer that will be used to run the Xebra Server. The installation program will start automatically. By default, the server will be installed on the C: drive. If you wish to use another drive, you may change the drive letter. The drive you select must be a local drive! Do not install the Xebra Server on a network drive.

Enter your company name and select the Continue button. The installation program creates a program group called ‘Xetex Xebra Server’ in the start menu. You may copy the server icon to your desktop. Run the Xebra Server from the program group or from the desktop Icon. A window similar to the one below will be displayed. The number of lines shown under Xebra Client Connections and Xebra ODBC connections will depend on the number of connections available on the license you purchased. The window below shows a 5 user license system.

As shown below, the server would assign a default IP address when started. This will work fine if the computer running the Xebra Server is only assigned one IP address. If the computer is assigned multiple IP addresses, you may need to uncheck the Use default address checkbox so that you can specify which IP address you want the Xebra Server program to use.

The 2nd Server Address information should be left blank. For the most part, this is used only by servers hosted at the XETEX Data Center. We have duplicate data lines served by different carriers and service providers. Should communications be interrupted on one line, they are automatically switched to the second line. This switch happens so fast that the operator is not even aware that it occurred. If you are hosting your own server and have duplicate lines, contact XETEX Customer Support.

Self-hosted Xebra Backup Client

The Xebra Server program must be running in order to install the Xebra Backup Client.

With that running, go into the Xebra Server folder and look for an EXE folder.  In this folder is a file called xbackup.exe.  Run this program.  It will ask for your server address, port, and workstation path.  The server address and port you will get from the Xebra Server program.  The workstation path may be left as is or you may change it if you want it to reside on another drive.  This program will install a Xebra Backup Client, which will appear in your programs menu.  Run the backup client.  Enter a backup time (i.e. 12:00AM), and select the "Start" button.  Minimize the backup client window and leave it running.

NOTE:  The first backup will take several hours to complete.  They will only take about 15 minutes from that point forward.

Installing XETEX Xebra Client Software

What is Client Software?

The client software is programs and temporary data storage that must be installed on each computer that will access your server. Your subscription price limits the number of users that can be active on your server at any given time. You may install the client software on as many computers as you wish. The client software you receive has a unique encryption that only lets it work with your server. Your server will only respond to computers running your client software.

Self-hosted Xebra Server

You must start your server before attempting to install the client software. Once your server is started, the connection Status column will show ‘Awaiting connection’ for each connection on your list. The Server Address and Port prompts will show the IP address and Port. You should write down this information.

XETEX Hosted Server

If XETEX is hosting your server, it will be already running when you receive your software. The Server Address and Port Number will be written on the ‘Client Setup’ CD that you receive with your software. You must ensure that the computer receiving the installation has an active Internet connection while doing the installation.

Installing the Client Software

The following steps must be completed for each computer that you want to have access to your Xebra Server. The computer workstation must have access to your Xebra Server via your Local Area Network or the Internet.

1. Insert the Client Setup CD into the computer .

2. Run the program setup.exe from the CD drive.

3. Enter the IP Address and Port where your server is running.

4. If you need to change the local workstation path, you may do so. This is not usually necessary.

5. Press the continue button to complete the installation. The installation will create a program group titled 'XETEX Xebra Client’ in your start menu.

Checking For Updates

XETEX Xebra is updated frequently. Often, the release software is a version behind the latest update. We recommend that you check for updates right after you install the software.

1. From a workstation that has access to the Internet, preferably broadband, go to Setup>Actions>Check for Update.

2. A window will be displayed that shows the IP address and port for the XETEX update server. Press the Continue button.

3. If your system is current, you will see a message that says, “No new updates are available”.

4. If an update is available, it will begin downloading immediately.

5. When the download completes you will see a window that shows all of the current connections to your server. Everyone except the client being used for the install must log out. There is a message facility available on the window.

6. When only one connection shows, you may press the Install button. The installation will begin. Sometimes updates require database reformatting that takes some time to complete. To speed the process, the window displayed is not refreshed and it may appear that the program has hung. Be patient. Do not break out of the program. During this process, your server will be stopped and restarted automatically. Once the server is updated, your connection will be automatically closed and your software updated. You will then be presented with the Xebra Login Screen.

7. The first time each client computer is logged into Xebra, the operator will experience a brief delay while their client software is updated.

The XETEX Website

XETEX sends e-mails to advise you when new updates are available. If you are not receiving e-mail notifications, contact Xetex Customer Support and provide the correct e-mail address of the person that should receive them.  The customer side of http:// www.xebra.com provides a link to Xebra System Information for customers on the Uniform System. Selecting “Uniform System Archive” displays a history of the releases and the changes included in each. Links to supplemental documentation are included where necessary.
