Changing Existing Characteristics

As stated earlier, changing an existing characteristic is not difficult but does require diligence to insure prospecting records are not falsely affected.  You must be aware that by changing an existing characteristic you will change all prospecting records that may have that characteristic currently selected.  Therefore, the first step in changing characteristics is to find which, if any, records would be affected.  To accomplish this we will take advantage of the Prospect Filter.

Commands > Set Prospect Filter

Under Select Characteristics, select Music-Classical and then OK.

Use the Find feature to see if any Prospecting records remain on the list.  In this case, there are two records (CHEETUM and GILL) which apparently have Music-Classical selected as a Prospect Characteristic.  We could choose to enter each record and remove Music-Classical as a selection or we could repeat this process until we find an unused characteristic.  For this example let’s close the Find dialog and return to Set Prospect Filter.  Clear the filter first and then select Opera and OK.  Using the Find option again you will see that no prospect record is currently using Opera and we can now change that characteristic with confidence.  Return to Prospecting and clear the Prospect Filter before proceeding.

From Prospecting > View > Characteristics

Find Opera on the existing list and replace with Heavy Metal.  Finish by selecting OK.

Page to the next Prospect Record and select Pick.  Notice that Opera is no longer an option and, in its place, Heavy Metal is now available.
